And as the name suggests, he was big. Six foot six and 18 stone. All the local ladies loved Big Dick as he would always return from his early morning trip down to Muncho Lake with a nice bit of wet fish for them to give to their men.
The summer time was always the best season in Rockard for a spot of salmon fishing. Plenty, (the young, svelte and buxom school bus driver) was always happy to assist us with our rods and tackle and would often accompany Dick and I on our Sunday afternoon trips down to Legsakimbo Creek
One particular day, Plenty,
was down by the creeks edge stroking a large pink one when she lost her
footing on the wet rocks and tipped in head first. She instinctively screamed
out for Big Dick but I was already moving towards her because I had witnessed
her going down. I dived into the chilly water and as we were both swept
downstream towards the jagged rocks of the Cougar Dam I managed to catch
hold of her wrist.
Luckily for us there was a broken tree branch bending into the water, I
had one chance to save us and I had to act fast. I reached out of the water
and somehow managed to grab it, and with all my strength, held on against
the raging current for dear life.
At that moment, a huge wild boar came out of the bushes and upon seeing us both dangling in the water like a giant ready meal, carefully started to edge across the rocks towards us. Fortunately for us, Big Dick, who had been running along the bank in pursuit of us, saw the Boar, picked up a two pound rock and hurled it directly at the beast, striking him on the top of the head killing him instantly.
And later on that same day as the sun set
over the valley, we all feasted heartedly on Salmon and wild Boar. Plenty
was quite exhausted by it all but she had to admit that a good spit roast
between friends was the perfect end to an exceptional day.
